Gratitude Challenge Day 1

Every day for the rest of 2020, I am going to post a list of 20 things I am grateful for in this blog. Here is my first one.

  1. I am grateful for the pink fuzzy slippers I bought at Aldi’s. They have pompoms on the ties and keep my feet so warm on these many days at home.
  2. I am grateful for my daughter and watching Friends with her each night by the Christmas tree with the fireplace lit.
  3. I am grateful for my son and that he still wants to read with me each night. Also, for the Kwame Alexander books that we are reading now which are written like poems.
  4. I am grateful for my dog and how she loves everyone and everything. How she is not trained very well and pulls the leash like crazy to meet any passerby on the street.
  5. I am grateful for nighttime walks with my mom, my daughter, my dog and sometimes my son where we stop to admire Christmas trees, candles in the windows, blow up Santas in front yards…
  6. I am grateful for the Rohatsu sesshin (zen meditation retreat) I’ve been coming in and out of on zoom for the last week. For Myoshin, Diane Benjamin, for leading the chants with her soft, strong voice. For the Heart of Great Perfect Wisdom Sutra.
  7. I am grateful for winter naps when I turn my electric blanket on high and listen to the sound of rain falling on my headphones to block out the noise of my house or the street.
  8. I am grateful for the feeling I get when I turn off the lights and close drawers with both hands.
  9. I am grateful for phones and computers charged to one-hundred percent.
  10. I am grateful for Schitt’s Creek and how it makes me laugh and laugh.
  11. I am grateful for all of the instruments in my house a bass guitar, two acoustic guitars, an electric guitar, my flute from fifth grade. my daughter’s clarinet, my son’s saxophone, and a piano.
  12. I am grateful that my husband is making a band out of himself and our children. That I get to listen to them play the 12 bar blues with my husband calling out chords or whose turn it is to take the melody.
  13. I am grateful for my vacuum cleaner which is light and easy to carry around. For clean floors however impermanent.
  14. I am grateful for the Minnehaha dog park. Getting to see my dog run free and swim in the river, meet other dogs on her own terms. For her uneven haircut from us having to cut off burrs in her fur.
  15. I am grateful that my husband makes coffee each night so I don’t have to in the morning.
  16. I am grateful for being able to teach on zoom, safe from the virus.
  17. I am grateful for a zoom meeting I had last week with a first grade Somali boy last week where I could hear his mom reciting the Salat al-zuhr, the midday Islamic prayer, in the background.
  18. I am grateful for the Lemieux family. Amy Lemieux started the amazing, intergenerational, nature preschool my son went to where he learned as a three year old to look all the grandmas and grandpas in the eye and shake their hands. The Lemieux family also made a huge donation to Circus Juventas, where my daughter has been taking contortion and aerial arts classes for the past two years. A place that has taught her she can do hard, amazing things and to get up when she falls.
  19. I am grateful that this April my daughter and I got to attend one of my best friend’s daughter’s Bar Vitzvah on zoom. That both Abby and I fell a little bit in love with her daughter (who lives in DC and we had never met) as we watched her put her glasses on and recite Hebrew.
  20. I am grateful that I have not lost anyone I love to the Corona Virus.
